AMD Stream Processor
November 2006The concept of stream computing which based in idea to used a lot number and parallel processor, have been recognized since long time. One of them is use in the Bluegene/L super computer, which using 131.072 processor (65.536 dual core).
The concept realized by AMD in the new product which just been introduced, namely AMD Stream Processor. Even looks new, in fact this product bases with GPU R580 (X1900). Compared to ordinary GPU, this processor is already provided with 1 GB GDDR3 memory, and the modification of AMD Stream Processor memory controller.
You maybe confuse, this product is GPU or processor? Both answers are right. Since last years, all software developer realizes that the GPU not only can be use for graphic rendering, but is also usable to process the data. Especially in heavy-weight calculation required application.
AMD Stream Processor use the PCI Express interface, Shader Model 3.0, 48 shader processor, and use driver called Compute Runtime (CTM). Even bases on the R580, this product support the Crossfire configuration, and its price costlier five times than a X1900 video card.
