Supercomputer "Roadrunner" use AMD Opteron
September 2006IBM And Energy Department National Nuclear Security Administration announce that IBM have won the agreement to make a supercomputer Los Alamos National Laboratory, to use more than 16.000 AMD Opteron processor and more than 16.000 processor Cell.
Supercomputer that named Roadrunner use the hybrid technology, it's joining Opteron server conventional cluster with the chip Cell, and will arrange some application. Every chip Cell, as ready as make by IBM, Sony and Toshiba, for the Playstation 3 console game, having eight special purpose engines which can swiftly calculate the physical performance.
Laboratory of LANL (Lawrence Livermore national Laboratory), previously have a supercomputer, Blue Gene/L IBM, which can calculate as fast as 280 quintillion calculate per second, or 280 teraflop. Roadrunner made to be four times quicker than Blue Gene, or can reach the speed of 1 quadrillion floating-point per second, or petaflop.
Roadrunner will use the Linux operating system, and there are the software to arrange the usage of processor Opteron and Cell. Roadrunner made using IBM hardware which sold commercially, like System x3755 server, with four Opteron processor and Bladecenter H IBM server bases on Cell.
